Kentucky crappie limits, lake by lake (2026)

The statewide crappie rule is one line long. The exceptions are what you need to know before you keep a fish: fourteen waters with their own crappie line, thirteen of them with a 9- or 10-inch minimum and four with a 15-fish daily limit. Every one below is quoted from the regulation, with its section number, and checked against KDFWR's own lake pages.

The Kentucky crappie size limit is none statewide, and the statewide crappie daily limit is 20. That is the whole statewide rule, so the crappie limit in KY is 20 a day with no minimum length unless your water has its own line. Fourteen waters do. Most of the big lakes on our map carry an exception: a 10-inch minimum on Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, Lake Cumberland, Barren River, Nolin River and Rough River; 9 inches on Green River Lake; and 10 inches with a 15-fish daily limit on Taylorsville and Dale Hollow.

The governing text is 301 KAR 1:201, Taking of fish by traditional fishing methods. Its history line ends "eff. 9-3-2026", so the version quoted here took effect on 3 September 2026. We read it on 20 October 2026.

The statewide rule

Section 2(1) sets the limits anglers "shall observe" for every species it lists, "except as established in Sections 3 through 7 of this administrative regulation or pursuant to 301 KAR 1:180." The crappie line is paragraph (h), quoted in full:

Section 2(1)(h): "Crappie daily limit, twenty (20); no size limit."

Two more lines matter here. Section 2(2): "The possession limit shall be two (2) times the daily limit." KDFWR's statewide limits page prints the result for crappie as a daily limit of 20, a possession limit of 40 and a minimum size of "none", with the footnote "Singly or combined; a total of these species", meaning black and white crappie count together. The same page says "One fishing day equals one calendar day for daily creel and fishing license purposes."

Basis: 301 KAR 1:201 Sections 2(1) and 2(2); KDFWR Statewide Size and Daily Limits, both read 20 October 2026.

The lake-by-lake exceptions

Section 3 is headed "Exceptions" and lists 71 waters, each with its own rules, and "all other provisions of this administrative regulation shall apply" to them. Fourteen of the 71 mention crappie. Every one is in the table, along with the two lakes on our map that have no crappie line and so fall back to the statewide rule. Where an exception sets only a size limit, the daily limit stays the statewide 20.

Basis: 301 KAR 1:201 Section 3, read 20 October 2026. A row whose KAR section is 2(1)(h) has no crappie line in Section 3, so the statewide rule applies there. A "20" beside a Section 3 entry is the statewide daily limit, which that entry leaves in place.

The regulation's own words

The table is a summary. Here is each crappie line exactly as the regulation prints it, with the water's heading where the heading itself sets the boundary.

  • 3(3)(a), Barren River Lake: "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(10)(c), Buckhorn Lake: "Crappie size limit, nine (9) inches."
  • 3(12)(b), Carr Creek Lake: "Crappie size limit, nine (9) inches."
  • 3(21)(g), Dale Hollow Lake: "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches; daily limit, fifteen (15)."
  • 3(28)(b), Fishtrap Lake: "Crappie size limit, nine (9) inches."
  • 3(35)(a), Green River Lake: "Crappie size limit, nine (9) inches."
  • 3(40)(b), "Kentucky Lake and the canal connecting Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley": "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(42)(b), Lake Barkley: "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(44)(a)4., Lake Cumberland: "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(49)(c), Laurel River Lake: "Crappie size limit, nine (9) inches; daily limit, fifteen (15)."
  • 3(55)(b), "Nolin River Lake shall extend up Bacon Creek to Highway 178 and to Wheelers Mill Road Bridge on the Nolin River": "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(61)(d), "Rockcastle River WMA, all ponds collectively, Pulaski County": "Crappie daily limit, fifteen (15)."
  • 3(62)(a), Rough River Lake: "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches."
  • 3(67)(c), "Taylorsville Lake, including the impounded waters of the lake to Dry Dock Road Bridge on the Salt River": "Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches; daily limit, fifteen (15)."

Three of those headings change where the rule stops. The Kentucky Lake limit covers the canal to Barkley. The Nolin limit runs up Bacon Creek to Highway 178 and up the Nolin River to Wheelers Mill Road Bridge. The Taylorsville limit runs up the Salt River to Dry Dock Road Bridge. If you fish the upper Salt River, check which side of that bridge you are on.

The regulation says "size limit". KDFWR's lake pages say the same thing as "Must be 10 inches or over" (or 9), so a size limit here is a minimum length.

Basis: 301 KAR 1:201 Section 3, read 20 October 2026; KDFWR waterbody pages, read the same day.

What KDFWR's lake pages say

We fetched KDFWR's own waterbody page for each lake on our map and compared it with the regulation. None of them conflicts with it. Here is the crappie wording on each:

  • Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley: "Must be 10 inches or over - limit 20 Crappie, Black or White, per angler."
  • Dale Hollow Lake and Taylorsville Lake: "Must be 10 inches or over" with "Limit 15 Crappie, Black or White, per angler."
  • Barren River, Lake Cumberland, Nolin River and Rough River: "Must be 10 inches or over, Statewide creel limits apply."
  • Green River Lake: "Must be 9 inches or over, Statewide creel limits apply."
  • Cave Run Lake: "Statewide Regulations Apply" for black and white crappie.
  • Herrington Lake: no crappie entry at all. The page lists only hybrid striped bass and white bass, both "Statewide Regulations Apply". That matches the regulation, where Herrington has no Section 3 heading of its own (the only Herrington entry is 3(23), the Dix River below the dam, and it carries no crappie line).

The lake pages agree with the regulation, but the regulation is the governing text, and the lake pages carry no date. None of the eleven lake pages we read shows an "updated" or "effective" date, and neither does KDFWR's statewide limits page. You cannot tell from a lake page whether it reflects the 3 September 2026 version or an older one. The regulation's history line can tell you.

Basis: KDFWR waterbody detail pages (app.fw.ky.gov) for the eleven lakes named, and KDFWR Statewide Size and Daily Limits, all read 20 October 2026.

The rivers, creeks and tailwaters

In this regulation, crappie appears only in Section 2(1)(h) and the fourteen Section 3 lines above. None of the river and tailwater headings in Section 3 that cover waters on our map has a crappie line: the Cumberland below Wolf Creek Dam (3(19)) and below Lake Barkley (3(20)), the Green River below Green River Lake Dam (3(34)), the Dix River below Herrington (3(23)), Elkhorn Creek (3(26)) and the Ohio River (3(56)). In this regulation, crappie on those waters fall under the statewide 20 and no size limit.

The one thing that statement does not cover is 301 KAR 1:180, the other regulation Section 2(1) names as a source of exceptions. We did not read it for this article. See below.

The regulation covers Kentucky waters only. Some of the waters on our map are outside Kentucky, and this page says nothing about them.

What we don't know yet

1. Whether 301 KAR 1:180 changes any crappie limit. Section 2(1) makes its limits subject to that regulation as well as to Sections 3 through 7. We did not read 1:180 in this run. Status pending.

2. Tennessee's rule on Dale Hollow. Dale Hollow crosses the state line. The Kentucky regulation's Dale Hollow entry has no reciprocal or Tennessee wording. We did not read Tennessee's regulations, so we make no statement about the Tennessee side. Status pending.

3. The licence year. None of the pages read for this article states the dates a fishing licence or the current Fishing and Boating Guide covers, so we have not stated one here. Status pending.

4. When each lake page was last updated. As above, KDFWR's lake pages and its statewide limits page carry no effective date. They match the regulation today. We cannot say when they were written.

5. Where Dry Dock Road Bridge sits relative to our upper Salt River page. The Taylorsville heading sets its boundary there. We have not mapped it against our page. Check the bridge before you keep a fish under 10 inches above the lake.
