8,210 acres of Green River backed up behind a 141-foot earth and rock dam south of Campbellsville, the largest project in the Louisville District counting land and water, with a 21,000-acre wildlife management area wrapped around the shoreline and a state park on the north bank. Muskellunge and walleye are stocked every year, the walleye carry a 14-inch minimum and a six-fish limit, the muskie a 40-inch minimum, and KDFWR’s own summer note is that from mid-June to mid-October the oxygen runs out below 17 to 20 feet.
The lake in one paragraph
Green River Lake is an Army Corps impoundment on the Green River in Taylor and Adair counties, authorised under the Flood Control Act of 1938, started in April 1964 and completed in June 1969. The dam is earth and rock fill, 141 feet at its highest, 2,350 feet long and 960 feet through the base, with a 103-foot, 1,952-foot dike beside it; the drainage above it is 682 square miles. The Corps runs it for flood control, recreation and natural resources management. The project is 33,793 acres of land and water — “the largest project in the Louisville District” — and it is an 11-mile drive from either Campbellsville or Columbia, which is the fact that organises this page. The Green is the longest river that starts and ends inside Kentucky, 370 miles of it, and the Corps put its first interpretive centre in the District here, in 1972.
The pool year, and the gauge that actually reads it
The Louisville District publishes the schedule. Summer pool is 675.0 feet, winter pool 668.0. The fill runs 15 March to 15 May in two steps. The drawdown is in two stages, and the second one is the one that matters.
| Window | From | To | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Mar – 15 Apr | 668.0 | 673.0 | Spring fill, first step |
| 16 Apr – 15 May | 673.0 | 675.0 | Spring fill to summer pool |
| 15 May – 15 Sep | 675.0 | Summer pool | |
| 15 Sep – 14 Oct | 675.0 | 674.5 | Drawdown stage 1 — half a foot |
| 15 Oct – 1 Dec | 674.5 | 668.0 | Drawdown stage 2 — the other six and a half |
| 1 Dec – 15 Mar | 668.0 | Winter pool | |
Those are targets. This is a flood-control lake, and it sits above target after rain for as long as the Corps needs to hold water back. The record is 705.2 feet, set in January 1979 — 30 feet over summer pool and eight feet under the 713-foot spillway crest. The April 2025 flood was forecast to reach 702 to 705 and the District afterwards listed the lake among those that “hit levels within their top five record pools of all time”; it did not say the 1979 record fell, so 705.2 stays the record here.
What seven feet does here
The half-foot step between 15 September and 14 October is close to nothing on the water; it is the Corps easing off the top. The move that rearranges the lake is 15 October to 1 December, when six and a half feet come out in six weeks. Two things about it are documented rather than guessed, and one thing is not.
First, KDFWR’s access records carry season flags, and three launches are not year-round: the Pikes Ridge ramp is “Seasonal - Limited Hours”, the Butler Creek ramp is “Seasonal - 24 Hours”, and the Wilson Creek carry-down is “Seasonal - 24 Hours”. Every other ramp is flagged year-round, 24 hours. Second, KDFWR’s 2026 forecast says where the fish go as the water cools: walleye to “dam area and headwater areas of Robinson Creek and Green River arms in late February through mid- to late March”, muskie trophies in “Fall, late winter, and spring”.
What is not documented is a winter-pool launch warning. Unlike Cave Run, where KDFWR names the ramps that fail at winter pool, no Green River Lake record carries one, and no Corps page gives a per-ramp closure elevation. So this page prints the pool figures and the season flags, and nothing else about which ramp goes dry.
Four roads in
KDFWR’s waterbody record lists seventeen lake sites with a direction string for all but the state-park pier, and the strings sort themselves: “KY 55 S of Campbellsville” to the Corps sign or to KY 1061; “KY 70 E of Campbellsville” with KY 372 and KY 76 off it; “KY 55 N of Columbia” with KY 551 and KY 682 off it. The corridors below are built from those strings, not from compass quarters. A corridor is one trip’s worth of road — the highway in, then every ramp, pier, campground and marina that road serves without doubling back through another corridor.
| Corridor | Road in | Access | Camping and marinas |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · KY 55 south | KY 55 south of Campbellsville 4.5 miles, left at the Corps sign | 1 fee ramp, 1 bank site, 1 pier; the tailwater ramp next door | None on this road; Corps visitor centre, Dam Area beach, two shelters |
| 2 · KY 1061 | KY 55 south 2 miles, left on KY 1061, 2 miles to the park | 2 free ramps, 1 pier | State park campground, 227 sites; Green River Marina |
| 3 · KY 70 east | KY 70 east of Campbellsville; KY 372 to Smith Ridge, KY 76 to Pikes Ridge | 3 fee ramps, 2 carry-downs | Smith Ridge and Pikes Ridge (Corps); Emerald Isle Marina |
| 4 · Columbia | Cumberland Parkway exit 49, KY 55 north; KY 551 and KY 682 | 1 fee ramp, 3 free ramps, 1 carry-down, 1 pier | Holmes Bend (Corps), 125 sites; Holmes Bend Marina |
That is ten trailered ramps, three carry-down launches, one bank site and three fishing piers. Five ramps charge: the four the Corps operates — Ramp #1 at the Dam Area, Holmes Bend, Smith Ridge and Pikes Ridge, on a Corps day-use pass whose price we do not print — and Emerald Isle Marina. Five trailered ramps are free: State Marina, State Park/Lone Valley, Butler Creek, Snake Creek and Arnolds Landing, the last three single-lane with no dock. Courtesy docks at Ramp #1, State Marina, Lone Valley, Emerald Isle, Smith Ridge, Pikes Ridge and Holmes Bend. The facility and season flags on this page are what KDFWR lists; they are not a check that a site is open today. Directions are KDFWR’s, verbatim.
Corridor 1 — KY 55 south: the dam, the Corps office and Ramp #1
This is the Corps end of the lake, and everything on it is off one signed left turn 4.5 miles south of Campbellsville: the project office at 544 Lake Road, open daily 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (“may vary, call ahead”), the visitor centre, the Dam Area beach, the Big Oak and Satterly picnic shelters, a free bank site at the office, an accessible fishing pier, and Ramp #1 — the Corps’ “Dam Area – Site 1” day-use area, paved, multi-lane, with a courtesy dock, 51-plus parking, year-round restrooms and a dump station. It is the deep-water end and the launch the drawdown changes least, by reasoning rather than measurement. The next left after the Corps sign, before the KY 55 bridge over the Green, is the tailwater ramp, which is a separate KDFWR water with its own rule and is linked below rather than carded here.
| Site | Getting there (KDFWR) | What is there |
|---|---|---|
| Corps Office · bank | KY 55 S of Campbellsville (4.5 miles); left at Corps of Engineers sign; 2nd road to right | Bank access, no fee, paved parking 26–50, restrooms and picnic year-round 24 h, accessible restrooms and parking. |
| Ramp #1 | KY 55 S of Campbellsville (4.5 miles); left at entrance to Corps of Engineers office; follow signs to ramp | Any light trailerable, paved multi-lane, fee, paved parking 51+, courtesy dock, restrooms year-round 24 h, picnic, accessible parking and pier. Ramp year-round 24 h. |
| Fishing Pier 1 | KY 55 S of Campbellsville (4.5 miles); left at entrance to Corps of Engineers office; follow signs to pier | Fishing pier, no fee, paved parking ≤25; other facilities “Unknown” on the record. |

Corridor 2 — KY 1061: Green River Lake State Park and the state marina
Two miles south of Campbellsville, left on KY 1061, two miles to the park entrance: the state park peninsula on the north shore of the Green River arm. Two free, multi-lane, year-round ramps with courtesy docks — the State Marina ramp with 51-plus parking and the only cleaning station KDFWR flags on the whole lake, and the Lone Valley ramp inside the park with 26–50 — plus an accessible state-park fishing pier, a beach beside the campground, and Green River Marina for boats, pontoons, houseboats and floating cabins. The campground is 227 sites (94 electric, 73 no-electric, 60 tent) and the reservation system shows it “Open through Tue Dec 15 2026”. The park is 179 Park Office Road, Campbellsville, (270) 465-8255. The state’s own park page returned a navigation shell when we read it, so hours, day-use fees and the beach season are status pending.

Corridor 3 — KY 70 east: Smith Ridge, Emerald Isle, Pikes Ridge and the Robinson Creek arm
The north-shore ridges between the Green River and Robinson Creek arms. KY 70 east is the trunk. KY 372 leaves it a mile out (Recreation.gov’s Smith Ridge directions) and serves the Smith Ridge campground ramp at three miles and Emerald Isle Marina by County Park Road; KY 76 leaves it at 2.5 miles and serves the Pikes Ridge campground ramp and the Wilson Creek carry-down; KY 70 itself, 3.8 miles from town, reaches Elkhorn, a bare carry-down and the farthest up the Robinson Creek arm any public launch goes. The WMA entrance is “Highway 70 East 4 miles” from Campbellsville. Three multi-lane fee ramps with docks, two Corps campgrounds (Smith Ridge 80 sites, Pikes Ridge 60), two beaches (Pikes Ridge’s for registered campers only), one marina. Pikes Ridge is the one multi-lane ramp on the lake KDFWR flags “Seasonal - Limited Hours”; outside the campground season the year-round launches on this road are Smith Ridge and Emerald Isle.

| Elkhorn · carry-down | From Campbellsville, southeast on KY-70 for 3.8 miles. | Carry-down only, no fee, unpaved parking ≤25, no facilities, shoreline year-round 24 h. |
Corridor 4 — Columbia: Holmes Bend and the upper Green River arm
The Adair County side, and the corridor for anyone coming up the Cumberland Parkway: exit 49, KY 55 north 1.5 miles, right on KY 551. One large Corps complex — Holmes Bend, with a 125-site campground (40 electric, 62 water and electric, 23 primitive), Holmes Bend Marina, a day-use beach, a multi-lane fee ramp with a dock, an accessible pier and the second Corps fishing pier — and then four free launches with almost nothing at them: the White Oak carry-down on the first road after KY 551 crosses the lake, Arnolds Landing by Casey Creek Road and Snake Creek by Snake Creek Road and a gravel road on the WMA, both single-lane with no dock, and Butler Creek, reached separately by KY 682 and Bridge Water Road on the west side of the arm, single-lane, no dock and flagged seasonal. This is the road that puts a kayak nearest the river-arm headwaters KDFWR names for spring walleye and white bass. Which side of the KY 551 bridge Holmes Bend Road leaves from is not stated by KDFWR; the map places it by coordinates only.

What the regulations tell you about the lake
| Species | KDFWR special regulation, verbatim |
|---|---|
| Walleye | “Must be 14 inches or over, Limit 6 per angler” |
| Muskellunge | “Must be 40 inches or over. Statewide creel limits apply.” |
| Black crappie | “Must be 9 inches or over, Statewide creel limits apply” |
| White crappie | “Must be 9 inches or over, Statewide creel limits apply” |
| Largemouth bass | “Statewide Regulations Apply” |
| Smallmouth bass | “Statewide Regulations Apply” |
| Spotted bass | “Statewide Regulations Apply” |
| White bass | “Statewide Regulations Apply” |
Eight rows and no “additional” line — unlike Cave Run, no gigging or snagging clause is listed for this lake. The muskellunge creel is the statewide one; the record does not restate it, so neither do we. Read the table as a description of the lake. The walleye row is the statewide rule restated — 301 KAR 1:201 Section 2(1)(c), “Sauger, walleye, and any hybrid thereof daily limit, singly or in combination, six (6); size limit, fourteen (14) inches” — and the regulation’s own Green River Lake section, 3(35), covers only crappie and muskellunge; KDFWR says the walleye population is “maintained by annual stocking”. A 40-inch muskie minimum is the trophy rule the state uses on its four stocked muskie lakes. A 9-inch crappie minimum, with KDFWR reporting “better than normal numbers of 11- to 13-inch fish”, is a harvest fishery being kept honest.
What KDFWR’s 2026 forecast says
The Fishing Forecast is a dated document, so these are quoted as the agency’s 2026 statements, not as this week’s report. Its header for the lake: “GREEN RIVER LAKE 8,210 acres (Taylor and Adair counties) Southwestern Fisheries District”.
- Walleye: “Overall numbers and numbers of larger fish (20-inch plus) are down a bit. Fish dam area and headwater areas of Robinson Creek and Green River arms in late February through mid- to late March. Target standing timber coves, main lake stump beds, humps, long points, and channel drop offs during summer and fall. Population maintained by annual stocking.”
- Muskellunge: “Legal-size fish (40-inch) and trophy fish (45-inch plus) available, but lower numbers. Fall, late winter, and spring are excellent times to catch trophy fish. Trolling main lake flats is good option summer through fall. Population maintained by annual stocking.”
- Largemouth bass: “Good numbers of quality-size fish (15-inch plus) and good numbers of 18-inch plus fish.”
- Smallmouth bass: “Low density overall; however, still a slight uptick in numbers from good spawns in 2015 and 2019. Fish in the mid- to lower sections of Robinson Creek and Green River arms for best numbers and chance for 20-inch plus fish.”
- Spotted bass: “Average numbers of 12-inch plus fish. 15-inch plus ‘spots’ not uncommon.”
- White bass: “Fair number >12 inches. Fish headwater areas in spring (mid-March to early April); troll flats and fish under floating lights during summer on into fall.”
- White crappie: “Good numbers of harvestable-size fish (9 inches plus) with better than normal numbers of 11- to 13-inch fish available. Number of overcrowded sub-legal fish is starting to reduce which should help growth.”
- Channel catfish: “All sizes available. Hook and line fishing best at night or when water levels are on the rise and muddy. Jug fishing good mid-summer to fall.”
- Bluegill: “Large population with occasional 7- to 8-inch fish. Fish stump beds and back ends of coves during spring and deep-water brush, standing timber, and structure during summer for larger fish.”
- The lake in summer: “Summertime (mid-June through mid-October) oxygen levels are too low to support fish below 17-20 feet.”
Muskellunge are stocked annually — KDFWR’s species page lists Green River Lake with Cave Run, Dewey and Buckhorn, and notes the fish is native to the Green River drainage. Walleye are “maintained by annual stocking”; the species page says several reservoirs get a Lake Erie strain but does not name this one. No KDFWR page we read gives a stocking number, size or rate for either, so we do not print one.
Who manages what
The Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, owns the dam, the four fee ramps, the three campgrounds, five picnic shelters and the visitor centre, and holds 23,967 acres of fee land above summer pool with a flowage easement to elevation 718 over 1,616 more. The shoreline outside the developed areas is Green River Lake WMA: 21,019 acres in Taylor and Adair counties on KDFWR’s record (the Corps says “approximately 20,500”), owned and managed by the Corps, “shoreline surrounding Green River Lake”. Its rules reach the bank: “Camping in designated areas only”; rabbit and quail 1 November to 31 December; pheasant quota hunts from 21 November; “Closed to muzzleloader deer seasons. Closed to modern gun deer season except for the quota hunt.” The Snake Creek ramp is on the WMA by name, and the other free launches sit on the same kind of ground — a November angler at Arnolds Landing or Butler Creek shares the lot with small-game hunters. The WMA office is (270) 283-0244. Green River Lake State Park, 1,241 acres in Taylor County, is the Kentucky Department of Parks’. The three marinas are private, under Corps lease: Emerald Isle (270) 465-3412, Green River (270) 465-2512, Holmes Bend (270) 384-4425 — Corps-published numbers; we did not read the marinas’ own pages.
Where the state has put cover
KDFWR’s waterbody record links a Google map of Green River Lake fish attractors, and the agency publishes a GPX file, Green_River_Lake.gpx. We have not been able to open and count the file, and the attractor index page would not open for us, so unlike Taylorsville there is no number here. Take the file from them.
What we have not verified
- Current pool. Live. Read USGS 03305990, parameter 62614, not any number printed on a website, including this one.
- Shoreline miles, maximum depth, storage. No Corps, KDFWR or state page we read states a figure; the Corps’ “Facts about the lakes” page would not open. Status pending.
- Which ramps go dry at 668. KDFWR prints no winter-pool note for this lake and the Corps prints no closure elevations. Only the season flags are printed.
- Campground dates and fees; ramp fees. Two Corps sources disagree on dates; the Pikes Ridge page would not open. Fee amounts change. “See Recreation.gov” is what we print.
- The state park’s hours, day-use fee, beach season, slip count. parks.ky.gov returned a navigation shell. Address and phone are from the reservation system.
- Wilson Creek camping. KDFWR flags seasonal camping at the carry-down; no Corps page names a campground there.
- Whether April 2025 set a new record pool. The Corps forecast 702–705 against the 705.2 record and afterwards said “top five”. 1979 stays the record here until a Corps page says otherwise.
- The elevation datum on Corps pages. The releases say “MSL”; USGS says NGVD29 for 62614. Printed as NGVD29 with USGS as the source.
- Master plan. The Division’s Green River Lake Master Plan Update page returned 404. Status pending.
- Attractor count. GPX linked, not counted.
- Algal bloom status. Kentucky publishes advisories only through the Division of Water’s interactive HAB viewer, which cannot be read from a static page. Check it directly in summer.
- The Fill and Drawdown page itself. It is titled for the 2024 season and carries a notice that the District site is moving to the Division site; it was live on 19 September 2026 and its figures agree with the Corps’ April 2025 release. The water watch re-checks it every run.
