10,000 acres of the Barren River backed up behind a dam on KY 252, twelve miles east of Scottsville and fifteen south-west of Glasgow, with a state resort park at Lucas and a Corps-owned, KDFWR-managed wildlife management area of 8,735 acres wrapped around the shoreline. Hybrid striped bass are stocked by the state, the crappie carry a 10-inch minimum, the black bass a 15-inch minimum, and the walleye an 18-to-26-inch protective slot that covers the whole Barren River and its tributaries, down to the Green River. KDFWR’s own summer note is that from mid-June through September the oxygen runs out below 15 feet.
The lake in one paragraph
Barren River Lake is an Army Corps impoundment on the Barren River in south-central Kentucky, authorised under the Flood Control Act of 1938. “Construction began on the dam in March 1960 and the lake became operational in October 1964.” The dam is on KY 252, “12 miles east of Scottsville, KY and 15 miles southwest of Glasgow, KY”, and the drainage above it is 940 square miles. The lake “covers 20,150 acres at maximum flood control pool and 10,000 acres at normal summer pool” — flood pool doubles the surface area — and the Corps says it “has prevented more than 3 times its original construction cost in flood damages.” The project sits in Allen and Barren counties, with project lands reaching into Monroe. The Corps leases the land and the water to KDFWR for fisheries and wildlife management, which is why the shoreline is a WMA and why two of the carry-down launches are on WMA ground. The Corps office is at 11088 Finney Road, Glasgow, and its hours are stated in Central time — this is the first Louisville District lake in this series west of the Eastern/Central line, and every clock on this page runs on it.

Updated hourly from USGS and Corps data, provisional. The time shown is the reading’s own, in Central time. Nothing older than three days is shown.
Basis: the reading is fetched by this site’s levels function from USGS gauge 03312900 (parameter 62614, lake surface elevation above NGVD 1929, marked provisional by USGS), with the Corps of Engineers’ Louisville District water-management record for Barren River Lake Dam as the fallback. The USGS water-data API, the older USGS instantaneous-values service and the Corps record were all read on 21 October 2026 and agreed within a tenth of a foot. The page stores no reading: the number, its time and its source arrive together or not at all. The time is printed on Central time, the clock this page runs on; USGS itself stamps this gauge’s readings on Central time.

Ramps and the published low-water figures
Fourteen launches, every lake site KDFWR lists (the tailwater ramp below the dam is its own water), in corridor order, against what the agencies publish about each one and the water. No Corps of Engineers or KDFWR page we could read publishes a minimum elevation for any ramp on Barren River Lake: the Corps’ water-management record carries the pool, not ramp elevations; the Division’s project and recreation pages and the Louisville District’s own pages would not load for us on 2 November 2026; the Corps Lakes Gateway shows open-or-closed icons and no elevation; Recreation.gov’s campground pages mention a boat ramp and give none; the state park’s page returned only navigation text. KDFWR’s one water-level note, on Port Oliver, is quoted in the table. The three figures in the table come from a different federal record: the National Weather Service’s gauge record for Barren River at Barren River Lake (BRRK2, the same site as USGS 03312900) carries a list of impact statements by elevation, and three of them name a ramp — “Browns Ford ramp unusable” at 536 feet, “Beaver Creek ramp unusable” at 531 and “Walnut Creek ramp unusable” at 530. The record credits the Corps and USGS for its data and does not say who wrote those lines; its 552 “Summer Pool” and 590 “Flood pool, spillway elevation” lines match the Corps’ figures on this page, so the three numbers sit on the same scale as the reading under the table. Each is printed as the elevation the record lists the ramp unusable at, in the record’s words, and the comparison is to that line and nothing more. The same record’s high-water lines for Baileys Point, Quarry Road and the state park ramp are quoted in their rows and are not compared. Where there is nothing, the row says so. The reading, when there is one, is the USGS gauge’s, feet above NGVD 1929; what a dock tells you by phone is current in a way this table is not.

The pool year, and the gauge that actually reads it
The Louisville District publishes the schedule. Summer pool is 552.0 feet, winter pool 528.0. The fill runs 15 March to 13 April. The drawdown is in two stages, and the second one is the one that matters.
| Window | From | To | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Mar – 13 Apr | 528.0 | 552.0 | Spring fill to summer pool — 24 feet in 30 days |
| 13 Apr – 15 Sep | 552.0 | Summer pool — the Corps’ water-management record labels 552 “Top of Conservation” | |
| 15 Sep – 14 Oct | 552.0 | 551.0 | Drawdown stage 1 — one foot |
| 15 Oct – 1 Dec | 551.0 | 528.0 | Drawdown stage 2 — the other twenty-three |
| 1 Dec – 15 Mar | 528.0 | Winter pool — the Corps’ water-management record labels its “Top of Normal” 525, three feet lower; see the note below | |
Those are targets. This is a flood-control lake, and it sits above target after rain for as long as the Corps needs to hold water back. The spillway crest is 590 feet, 38 feet above summer pool. The previous record was “set 36 years ago in March 1989 when the pool reached 583 feet MSL”; on 7 April 2025 the District reported “As of 6:00 a.m., Barren River Lake was at 583.6 feet MSL” with the lake “still rising” and forecast to crest “between 586-587 MSL”. The Corps’ after-action release could not be read, so we print the record as set in April 2025 — 583.6 feet on 7 April, still rising, final crest per the Corps — and nothing higher. Status pending. That April, the campground openings were delayed by the flood.
What twenty-four feet does here
The one-foot step between 15 September and 14 October is close to nothing on the water; it is the Corps easing off the top. The move that rearranges the lake is 15 October to 1 December, when twenty-three feet come out in seven weeks — more than twice the whole annual drawdown at Cave Run, and three times Green River’s. Two things about it are documented rather than guessed, and one thing is not.
First, KDFWR’s access record for Port Oliver — the designated tournament ramp at the dam — is the only per-ramp winter statement from KDFWR or the Corps we could find for this lake, in its own words: “This ramp is not useable at lower water levels, primarily during winter drawdowns.” The same record warns organisers that “scheduling a tournament release site at the Port Oliver area during the mid Sept. – early Nov. time frame may subject your tournament released bass to stressful conditions (low oxygen levels) that can lead to poor bass survival.” Second, KDFWR’s access records carry season flags, and five launches are not year-round: the state park campground ramp is “Seasonal - Limited Hours”; Beaver Creek, Austin, Walnut Creek and Browns Ford are “Seasonal - 24 Hours”; and the Narrows Marina launch is “Year Round - Limited Hours” — marina hours. Every other ramp is flagged year-round, 24 hours.
No Corps or KDFWR page we could read gives a per-ramp closure elevation, and no KDFWR record but Port Oliver’s translates the 24-foot drop into a launch warning. The National Weather Service’s gauge record for the lake does carry three: it lists Browns Ford as unusable at 536 feet, Beaver Creek at 531 and Walnut Creek at 530, and does not say who wrote the lines. They are in the ramps table under the current level above, in the record’s words with the day it was read. For the other eleven launches this page prints the pool figures, the Port Oliver sentence and the season flags, and nothing else about which ramp goes dry.
Four roads in
KDFWR’s waterbody record lists fourteen lake sites with a direction string for every one, and the strings sort themselves: “US 31E SW of Glasgow; right on KY 252” or “US-31E northeast of Scottsville, left on KY 252” to the dam; “US 31E SW of Glasgow” then Old Street, KY 1318 or the state park entrance; “US 31E SW of Glasgow; left on KY 87”; “KY 98 E of Scottsville”. The corridors below are built from those strings, not from compass quarters. A corridor is one trip’s worth of road — the highway in, then every ramp, campground and marina that road serves without doubling back through another corridor.
| Corridor | Road in | Access | Camping and marinas |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · KY 252 | KY 252 across the dam, from US 31E out of Glasgow or Scottsville; KY 2065, the Corps road, Port Oliver Boat Ramp Road, KY 517 | 3 fee ramps, 1 carry-down; the tailwater ramp next door | Baileys Point and Tailwater (Corps); Peninsula Marina |
| 2 · US 31E | US 31E south of Glasgow; Old Street / River Road, KY 1318 (Lucas Road), South Lucas Road, the state park entrance | 2 fee ramps, 3 free ramps, 1 carry-down | Beaver Creek and The Narrows (Corps); state park campground; The Narrows Marina, state park marina |
| 3 · KY 87 | US 31E south of Glasgow, left on KY 87; KY 1342 (Boat Ramp Road), Bradshaw Road | 1 free ramp, 1 carry-down | None |
| 4 · KY 98 | KY 98 east of Scottsville; KY 1855 at 2.5 miles, Browns Ford at 9 | 2 ramps, free per the Corps | None confirmed |
That is eleven trailered ramps and three carry-down launches. The Corps’ own sentence on fees: “The Corps of Engineers charges a day use fee to launch boats, except for Austin, Browns Ford, Walnut Creek, Tailwater, and the State Park boat ramps.” We print “fee ramp, Corps day-use pass” and no amount. KDFWR flags six ramps with a fee — Peninsula, Port Oliver, Baileys Point, Narrows Ramp, Beaver Creek and Browns Ford — and Browns Ford is where the two agencies disagree: KDFWR “Ramp Fee: Yes”, the Corps lists it free. Look for the fee box. Five trailered ramps are free on KDFWR’s flags: the state park ramp, the campground ramp, Narrows Marina (marina hours), Austin and Walnut Creek. Courtesy docks at Peninsula, Port Oliver, Narrows Ramp and Beaver Creek; none at Baileys Point, the state park ramp, Austin, Walnut Creek or Browns Ford, nor at Narrows Marina or the campground ramp. Single lane: the campground ramp and the tailwater. The facility and season flags on this page are what KDFWR lists; they are not a check that a site is open today. Directions are KDFWR’s, verbatim.
Corridor 1 — KY 252: the dam from either town — Peninsula, Quarry Road, Port Oliver and Baileys Point
This is the Corps end of the lake, and one road serves both abutments because KY 252 crosses the dam. On the Barren County side coming from Glasgow: the Corps office and visitor centre at 11088 Finney Road, the Quarry Road recreation area — the lake’s largest beach, two fishing piers (“the main lake” or “a small pond adjacent to the parking lot”), a one-mile prairie loop trail and a carry-down launch — and the KY 2065 spur to Peninsula, a multi-lane fee ramp with a courtesy dock and a marina. On the Allen County side coming from Scottsville: Port Oliver, the designated tournament ramp, with a courtesy dock, an accessible pier, the weigh-in shelter and “2,400 feet of ADA accessible boardwalk”; then the KY 517 spur to Baileys Point, the Corps’ largest campground at 215 sites, with a multi-lane fee ramp, no dock and a lot “a considerable distance uphill from the ramp”. Both USGS gauges read here. This is the deep, clear, lower-lake end KDFWR’s forecast names for smallmouth. The last left before the dam from the Scottsville side is the Tailwater campground and ramp — a different water, linked below rather than carded. Field card: No. 13-1, Barren River Lake · KY 252.

Corridor 2 — US 31E south of Glasgow: Beaver Creek, The Narrows and the state resort park
The developed north shore, and the corridor with the most launches in one run. Old Street and River Road first, to Beaver Creek on the upper Beaver Creek arm: a multi-lane fee ramp with a courtesy dock, a 12-site primitive Corps campground (“no electric, two water stations, a swimming beach and a vault toilet”) and a Corps beach, all flagged seasonal. Then KY 1318, Lucas Road, at “10 miles” from Glasgow on Recreation.gov’s count, to The Narrows: a multi-lane fee ramp with a dock, a 92-site Corps campground and The Narrows Marina with its own limited-hours launch; across the stop sign, South Lucas Road to the WMA carry-down and the Corps’ fishing pier “on Peter Creek”. Then the state resort park entrance: a free multi-lane ramp with the only cleaning station KDFWR flags on the lake, a single-lane seasonal campground ramp, a marina with rentals, a 51-room lodge, 22 cottages, a 101-site campground, a beach and an 18-hole golf course. The lodge is shut: the Kentucky State Parks improvements page (undated; read 1 November 2026) says the “Barren River State Resort Park lodge is closed through spring of 2027”, and no parks page we could read that day says whether the cottages are open — status pending. The park is open “March 15 through November 15” and its main ramp is flagged year-round, which makes this the corridor for a family trip or a winter launch with facilities. KDFWR’s forecast points spring hybrid, white bass and yellow bass anglers to the upper lake and “areas above the lake”; Beaver Creek is the nearest paved launch on this side. Corridor 3 — KY 87 south of Glasgow: Austin and the Dry Creek Unit
The east bank of the upper Barren River arm, reached from US 31E by a left on KY 87, and two free, minimal launches that are both on the Corps’ own no-fee list. Austin, at the end of KY 1342 (“Boat Ramp Road”), is a multi-lane paved ramp with no dock, flagged seasonal, with seasonal restrooms and a lot that is “a considerable distance uphill from the ramp”. The Dry Creek Unit WMA carry-down, off Bradshaw Road, is bare: unpaved lot, no facilities, WMA ground. This is the corridor for a kayak or a light trailer aimed at the upper arm in spring, when KDFWR’s forecast sends hybrid and yellow bass anglers “above the lake”, and — reasoning, labelled as such — the one most exposed to the fall drawdown, because both launches are on the upper arm and Austin’s ramp is flagged seasonal. Field card: No. 13-3, Barren River Lake · KY 87.

Corridor 4 — KY 98 east of Scottsville: Walnut Creek and Browns Ford
The west bank of the upper arm and the farthest-up public ramp on the lake, from the Scottsville side. Walnut Creek, by KY 1855 at 2.5 miles, is a free multi-lane paved ramp with no dock, year-round restrooms and picnic ground, flagged seasonal; KDFWR flags a marina there, seasonal limited hours, that no Corps page names, and the Corps Lakes Gateway lists campsites and showers at Walnut Creek that no other Corps page describes — both status pending. Browns Ford, nine miles out KY 98, is a bare multi-lane ramp — no restrooms, no dock, seasonal — and the Corps’ list calls it free while KDFWR flags a fee. This is the Scottsville-side road for the upper river arm in spring: KDFWR’s 2026 forecast gives white bass a “spawning run in late March to mid-April” and yellow bass “Mid- to late April” in “areas above the lake”. It is also — reasoning, labelled as such — the road that dries out first in the drawdown: both ramps are flagged seasonal and sit on the upper arm. Field card: No. 13-4, Barren River Lake · KY 98.

Twelve rows, and three of them depart from statewide in ways worth stating plainly: the 10-inch crappie minimum (statewide has no crappie size limit, and a creel of twenty); the 15-inch, six-fish rule on largemouth and smallmouth (statewide is 12 inches and six); and the 15-fish combined channel-and-blue catfish creel with no more than one over 25 inches. The walleye slot is a native-strain restoration rule, and the Barren River record describes its reach: “To protect Native strain walleye during restoration, there is a two fish daily creel limit with an 18- to 26-inch protective slot limit for walleye in the upper Barren River and tributaries, Barren River Lake and the Barren River below Barren River Lake downstream to Lock and Dam 1 and tributaries.” The regulation reaches further. 301 KAR 1:201 Section 4(1)(a) covers the “Barren River and tributaries upstream from confluence with the Green River, including Barren River Lake”, and the Fishing & Boating Guide lists the slot for “Barren River and all tributaries including Barren River Lake”. So the slot holds below Lock and Dam 1 as well, all the way to the Green River. Read the table as a description of the lake. A 10-inch crappie minimum on a lake where KDFWR reports “Excellent numbers overall” is a harvest fishery being kept honest. A 15-inch black bass minimum, three inches over statewide, on water with “above-average numbers of 18-inch fish”, is a state protecting the year classes it already has. A combined channel-and-blue catfish creel that allows one fish over 25 inches is a rule written for the big fish.
What KDFWR’s 2026 forecast says
The Fishing Forecast is a dated document, so these are quoted as the agency’s 2026 statements, not as this week’s report. Its header for the lake: “BARREN RIVER LAKE 10,000 acres (Allen and Barren counties) Southwestern Fisheries District”.
- Largemouth bass: “Good numbers overall and above-average numbers of 18-inch fish.”
- Smallmouth bass: “Very low density population overall, but good quality when you find them. Target lower 1/3 of lake.”
- Spotted bass: “Lower-density population overall; however, better than average quality fish (14 inches plus) available.”
- Hybrid striped bass: “Overall numbers are excellent with large fish (25-inch plus) available. Spring fishing best in upper lake.”
- White bass: “Moderate numbers. Best opportunity is during the spawning run in late March to mid-April.”
- Yellow bass: “Most fish are 7-9 inches in length. Mid- to late April is best in areas above the lake.”
- Crappie: “Excellent numbers overall (Black and White). Numbers and sizes of keeper fish is very good.”
- Catfish: “Good populations of Blue, Channel, and Flathead catfish present with good numbers of larger individuals.”
- Bluegill: “Good numbers of 6- to 8-inch fish. Fish stump beds and back of coves during the spring and fall.”
- The lake in summer: “Summertime (mid-June through September) oxygen levels are too low to support fish below 15 feet.”
Hybrid striped bass are “stocked regularly by State of Kentucky” — that is the Corps’ fishing page, undated. No KDFWR page we read gives a stocking number, size or rate for the hybrids, and the forecast entry carried no walleye paragraph; the walleye rule says “Native strain walleye during restoration” and no stocking statement was read. So no stocking figure is printed. Below the dam, the Corps names “muskie, catfish and also hybrid and striped bass”, and KDFWR’s float guide “good numbers of spotted bass, rock bass, bluegill and surprising numbers of muskellunge” with smallmouth “exceeding 18 inches”.
Who manages what
The Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, owns the project — “10,000 acres of federal lands” and “the 10,000 acres of water” — and operates the dam, the visitor centre and office at 11088 Finney Road, the fee ramps, the Quarry Road and Beaver Creek beaches, three Class A campgrounds (“Baileys Point, The Narrows and Tailwater”) and Beaver Creek, four reservable picnic shelters, the Port Oliver boardwalk and amphitheater. The current master plan “was completed in 1985”. Peninsula’s day-use area and ramp have been “managed by Peninsula Marina” since 1 January 2025. Three rules of the Corps’ reach the bank: “Swimming, wading, snorkeling, or scuba diving at one’s own risk is permitted, except at boat launching sites, designated mooring points and public docks”; tournaments at a Corps ramp need a special event permit; and “Much of the lake is bordered by private land, which requires written permission from the landowner for visitors to cross their land to access federal land.” There is no lifeguard service at Corps beaches.
The shoreline outside the developed areas is Barren River Lake WMA: 8,735 acres in Allen and Barren counties on KDFWR’s record, “Owned by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers”, “WMA consists of shoreline surrounding Barren River Lake. Access from US 31E and KY 87, 98, 100 and KY 252, and by lake.” (The Corps says “approximately 8,000 acres are available for all types of hunting”; we print 8,735 with KDFWR cited.) Its rules reach the bank: “no camping on management area”; rabbit and quail 1 November to 31 December except the opening weekend of modern-gun deer season; the Peninsula Unit and the islands restricted to muzzleloading shotguns or crossbows during the fall turkey firearm season, and “primitive weapons only: bow, crossbow, and muzzleloader” on the Corps’ description. No hunting in the state park, the Corps recreation areas or “the Girl Scout leased area on Cooks Creek”. The WMA carry-down on South Lucas Road and the Dry Creek Unit carry-down are on WMA ground by name; a November angler there shares the ground with small-game hunters, and cannot camp. WMA office (270) 646-5167.
Barren River Lake State Resort Park, Kentucky Department of Parks, 1149 State Park Rd, Lucas, (270) 646-2151, “44 miles southeast of Bowling Green”: open March 15 through November 15; Louie B. Nunn Lodge, 51 rooms; 22 two-bedroom cottages; the 101-site campground; the free ramp and the campground ramp; the marina; the beach; golf. The lodge is closed. The Kentucky State Parks improvements page (parks.ky.gov/improvements, undated; read 1 November 2026) says: “Barren River State Resort Park lodge is closed through spring of 2027. Renovations will include updating lodge rooms with new bedding, drapes, flooring, bathrooms, mini fridges, and art. The restaurant, lobby and meeting room will also receive key updates.” It gives no reopening date beyond “spring of 2027” and says nothing about the cottages, and the state’s park-closures page, read the same day, repeats the lodge sentence and is silent on the cottages too. Cottage status: pending. The state’s own park page returned a navigation shell again on 1 November 2026, so day-use fees, beach fees and slip pricing are status pending. The two private marinas, Peninsula Marina (KY 2065 off KY 252) and The Narrows Marina (Lucas Road), are under Corps lease; the Corps Lakes Gateway names them and prints no phone number for either. We did not read the marinas’ own pages.
Where the state has put cover
KDFWR publishes a GPX file and a Google map of marked attractor sites for Barren River Lake, from the agency’s attractor index — Barren_River_Lake.gpx and the map, which the waterbody record links as well. We have not opened and counted the file, and KDFWR does not state a count on the page, so unlike Taylorsville there is no number here. Take the file from them.
What we have not verified
- Current pool. The Current lake level block above fills from USGS 03312900, parameter 62614, with the reading’s own time and source, when the page’s script runs; nothing older than three days is shown and no reading is stored in the page. Read the gauge yourself before you tow.
- The final April 2025 crest. The Corps’ 7 April release records 583.6 feet, “still rising”, forecast 586–587; the after-action release could not be read. Record pool set April 2025, final crest per the Corps. Status pending.
- Dam dimensions, shoreline miles, maximum depth, storage, lake length. The District’s lake page and its “Facts about the lakes” page would not open. Status pending.
- The elevation datum on Corps pages. The releases say “MSL”; USGS says NGVD29 for 62614. Printed as NGVD29 with USGS as the source.
- Ramp, beach and campground fees. Amounts change; “fee ramp, Corps day-use pass”, “fee area” and “fee site, see Recreation.gov” are what we print.
- Peninsula pass eligibility. “Managed by Peninsula Marina” since 1 January 2025; whether the Corps annual pass is honoured there is not stated. The Corps sentence is printed, not a yes or no.
- Browns Ford fee. KDFWR “Ramp Fee: Yes”; the Corps lists it free. The conflict is printed.
- Campground season dates. Recreation.gov gives month-level windows; the 2025 openings were flood-delayed. “Seasonal — dates on Recreation.gov” is what we print. Beaver Creek: 12 primitive sites per the Corps, no Recreation.gov page found, season status pending.
- Walnut Creek marina and campsites. KDFWR flags a seasonal marina; the Gateway table flags campsites and showers; no Corps page names either. Status pending.
- Tailwater campground management. A District release on a cooperative management agreement for the Tailwater campground was surfaced by search and returned 403. The tailwater is its own water. Status pending.
- Private marina phone numbers. Peninsula Marina and The Narrows Marina: no Corps page prints one. Status pending; no marina website is printed.
- State park day-use fee, beach fee, slip pricing. The park’s own parks.ky.gov page returned a navigation shell again on 1 November 2026. Status pending.
- State park lodge reopening date, and the cottages. The improvements page (undated; read 1 November 2026) says the lodge “is closed through spring of 2027” and gives no date. It says nothing about the cottages, and neither does the park-closures page read the same day. A page saying nothing about the cottages is not a statement that they are open. Cottage status pending — the park’s number is (270) 646-2151.
- Which ramps go dry at 528. No Corps or KDFWR page we could read gives a per-ramp closure elevation. The National Weather Service’s gauge record BRRK2 (read 2 November 2026) lists three — Browns Ford 536, Beaver Creek 531, Walnut Creek 530 — and does not say who wrote them; they are in the ramps table with that attribution. For the other eleven launches, KDFWR’s Port Oliver sentence, the pool figures and the season flags are all that is printed. Status pending.
- USGS 03313000. Read 21 October 2026: gage height and water temperature current, discharge series ended 30 September 1994. It is the tailwater stage gauge; no flow figure here comes from it.
- Attractor count. GPX and map linked, not counted.
- Algal bloom status. Kentucky publishes advisories only through the Division of Water’s interactive HAB viewer, which cannot be read from a static page. Check it directly in summer.
- The Fill and Drawdown page itself. It is titled for the 2024 season and carries a notice that the District site is moving to the Division site; it was live on 23 September 2026 and its 552.0 / 528.0 figures agree with the Corps’ April 2025 releases. The water watch re-checks it every run.
- The District project page. Read in full at the start of the run; it returned 403 on re-open. The acreage sentence was re-confirmed on the Master Plan Updates page; the remaining project facts stand on the first read.
