Nolin River Lake Tailwater · Access, Rules & Releases

One ramp, a stocked trout reach, and a float that ends in a national park

This is the river below Nolin River Lake Dam, not the lake — KDFWR keeps it as a separate record with one access site and two species rows, both “Statewide Regulations Apply.” The ramp record still carries a closure note referring to a 2016 event that the Park Service says ended with the dam’s removal; the Corps closed the same ramp for improvements in August 2026 and said it would reopen before Labor Day. What follows is what is documented, dated, with the gaps left as gaps.

Below Nolin River Lake Dam the Nolin River runs about 7.5 miles to the Green River inside Mammoth Cave National Park; KDFWR files the reach under Edmonson County. KDFWR stocks it with trout — eight thousand across six stockings in the archive year we could read — and lists only brown and rainbow trout on its record, under statewide limits. There is one paved, single-lane, no-fee ramp at the Corps’ Tailwater Recreation Area. There is no live discharge reading for this reach, no pool schedule of its own, and no published coordinate for the dam. Central time applies.

Nolin River Lake Tailwater. The Tailwater ramp is placed at its KDFWR coordinates, and Houchins Ferry — the float’s take-out on the Green River in Mammoth Cave National Park, not part of this water — at KDFWR’s coordinates for it. Nolin River Lake Dam has no published coordinate, so it is drawn between the USGS lake gauge, the lake-side Nolin Dam Ramp record and the Tailwater record, and labelled as estimated, not surveyed. The Nolin–Green confluence and the former Lock and Dam 6 site have no published coordinate and are not placed. River line, roads and land shading are schematic.

The tailwater in one paragraph

The Corps puts Nolin River Dam “about 8 miles above the Confluence of the Nolin and Green Rivers near the community of Bee Spring”; the Park Service counts “7.5 miles (12 km) of the Nolin River” from the Tailwater Recreation Area “to the confluence with the Green River in the park.” The lake above the dam is published on this site as its own water. KDFWR files the river below as a separate waterbody (wid=80, “Nolin River Lake Tailwater”) with one access site, and the Park Service describes the Tailwater Recreation Area as “a recreation access point for the Nolin River before it flows into Mammoth Cave National Park,” a “small day-use area” that “is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.” Treat the lake and the tailwater as related, not the same water.

The ramp, and the closure note that is probably not about today

KDFWR’s access-site record for the Tailwater ramp still says, verbatim: “The Nolin River Lake Tailwater Boat Ramp is temporarily closed due to reduced water levels following the partial failure of Lock and Dam 6 on the Green River.” That is KDFWR’s note, and we print it as KDFWR’s. Three later, dated statements sit beside it:

  • NPS, 2026: “In 2016 there was a failure of Lock and Dam No. 6 on the Green River, downstream of the confluence with the Nolin River, and the dam was ultimately removed.” NPS’s Tailwater page (2022): “A paved boat ramp provides access to canoers, kayakers, and boaters wanting to access the national park on the Nolin River.”
  • The Corps, reported by WNKY on 20 August 2026: “According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, the boat ramp and the adjacent parking lot will close on the morning of Monday, August 24” for “improvement projects”; “the boat ramp will reopen before Labor Day weekend.”
  • The Corps’ own Nolin River Lake social-media post is titled “The Nolin Tailwater boat ramp is now open…” after the Lock and Dam 6 demolition — a lead we could not read or date with our tools, named here for you to check, not as evidence.
Call before you drive. Reasoning, not measurement: read together, those statements describe a ramp that has been in service since the 2016 event and was closed briefly for improvements in late August 2026. That is this page’s reading of dated sources, not any agency’s statement, and nobody on this site has confirmed the ramp’s condition today. Corps office, (270) 286-4511, Central time.

The lake’s pool and the dam’s releases — context, not this reach’s own reading

A river reach has no pool elevation. The figures below are the lake’s, printed so you know what the dam is doing to the water below it, and nothing here is a measurement of the tailwater itself.

Minimum discharge, one dated statement50 cfsCorps release, 7 July 2025 — the figure the dam held during stilling-basin repairs that summer, not a current reading
No current outflow figure is printed here. The Louisville District’s Daily Lake Report publishes one; our research tools were refused by that page, which is a limitation of our research, not proof the number is unavailable. For today’s release, call the Corps office, (270) 286-4511. No Nolin-specific recorded information line appears on any Corps page we read.
What the alert watches. Nothing automatic on this reach yet. This site’s daily watcher can read the outflow series on the Corps’ water-management record for Nolin Lake (location nolin, water.usace.army.mil, read 29 October 2026), but a release is watched only against a threshold printed here and traced to a primary source, and none exists for this reach: the 50 cfs figure above is what the dam held during one summer’s repairs, not a standing minimum, and no KDFWR, Corps or Park Service page we read gives a floating or fishing flow for the Nolin below the dam. Status pending. An email to Nolin River Lake Tailwater subscribers is a published notice: a ramp closure, a release announcement, a rule change.

The Park Service’s own warning, verbatim: “Water levels can change rapidly due to weather (i.e. rise 20-50 feet in the hours and days after a rain event) or due to water release schedules from the Nolin River Dam.” No release-warning system at the dam is described on any page we read; do not assume one exists.

The gauge, and why it does not answer “what is the flow right now”

The tailwater has its own USGS station, 03311000, Nolin River at Kyrock, KY (37.2742157, −86.2508064 — on the ramp; drainage area 703 square miles; operated “in cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers - Louisville District”). It lists two parameters: 00065 gage height and 00010 water temperature. No discharge series is listed. When we read the page on 27 September 2026, the most recent values it displayed were dated 1 August 2026 (gage height 17.03 ft), and the page carries this notice: “The real-time water-quality data will cease for this site, as funding for the data collection ends in late December.” Whether the station is transmitting today is status pending — this site does not treat it as a live feed.

The lake’s pool gauge, USGS 03310900, reads lake elevation (parameter 62614) at the dam. That is the lake page’s instrument, on a different question. The Park Service maintains a separate station on the Green River inside the park for its own river-closure rule (below); it does not read the Nolin at the dam.

Trout: what the stocking record actually says

The Corps: “Kentucky Fish and Wildlife regularly stocks the Tailwater at Nolin.” KDFWR’s Yearly Trout Stocking Archive, read 27 September 2026, carries these Nolin rows, verbatim:

DateArchive row
September 2025“Nolin Lake Tailwater Stocking is postponed until further notice due to water conditions.”
October 8, 2025“Nolin Lake Tailwater, Edmonson County – 2000”
November 13, 2025“Nolin Lake Tailwater, Edmonson County - 2000”
April 1, 2026“Nolin Lake Tailwaters, Edmonson County - 1000”
May 19, 2026“Nolin Lake Tailwaters, Edmonson County – 1000”
June 18, 2026“Nolin Lake Tailwater, Edmonson County – 1000”
July 14, 2026“Nolin Lake Tailwater, Edmonson County – 1000”

Eight thousand trout in six stockings across that archive year. The archive groups its rows under species headings that our read did not capture, so this page says “trout,” not rainbow or brown, for each row. KDFWR’s monthly schedule adds: “Stocking dates for streams on Federal Property are not announced ahead of time.” KDFWR’s 2026 trout-stream classification PDF, read directly (not through our fetch tool, which had paraphrased it two different ways), lists the reach on page 8 under “CLASS II STREAMS,” Tailwaters: stream “Nolin River Lake (Nolin River),” county Edmonson, 3.5 miles of trout water, location “Dam to 3.5 mi below,” type “Brown p-g-t / Rainbow p-t” — brown trout put-grow-take, rainbow trout put-and-take. Class II streams are the document’s own words: “high quality trout streams that have a low number of days (≤25) above 72° F in a calendar year… These streams may still provide holdover trout but are not considered exceptional.” The document’s intro text separately names “the Nolin tailwater” among streams “recently added to the Brown Trout stocking list,” which agrees with the table.

Reasoning, not measurement. Where in the reach the fish are released, their size, and whether any hold over: none of it is published on the pages we read. The Corps also lists “Bass, Bluegill, Catfish, Crappie, Trout, and Walleye” for the Nolin project as a whole — a project-wide sentence that does not say which of those are in the river below the dam.

The regulation: statewide limits, and the regulation’s own words on why

KDFWR’s record for this water has two rows — brown trout and rainbow trout, both “Statewide Regulations Apply.” The regulation agrees. 301 KAR 1:201, current in-force version, Section 2 makes the statewide limits the default “except as established in Sections 3 through 7,” and Section 3’s lead-in scopes every exception “to the bodies of water listed in this section.” The only subsection that names Nolin is Section 3(55), verbatim: “Nolin River Lake shall extend up Bacon Creek to Highway 178 and to Wheelers Mill Road Bridge on the Nolin River. (a) Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass size limit, fifteen (15) inches. (b) Crappie size limit, ten (10) inches.” That subsection defines the lake’s upstream extent and the lake’s limits. No subsection lists the river below the dam. So the lake’s 15-inch bass and 10-inch crappie limits stop at the lake, and statewide limits apply on this reach. (The Kentucky LRC site also serves a proposed, not-yet-current version of this regulation at a “/REG/”-suffixed URL, numbered differently — Section 1 for statewide limits, Section 2(55) for Nolin; this page cites the current in-force version and its numbering throughout.)

Statewide limits that apply here (301 KAR 1:201 §2; KDFWR statewide table)

SpeciesDaily limitSize limit
Rainbow trout8none
Brown trout116 in
Brook troutCatch and release only
Black bass — largemouth & smallmouth612 in
Walleye, sauger, hybrids (singly or combined)614 in

Possession, per the regulation: “two (2) times the daily limit.” A trout permit is “Required for trout fishermen” (KDFWR license descriptions).

Method rules — kept separate from the limits above

No special method rule applies to this reach: no subsection of 301 KAR 1:201 places a gear, bait or single-hook restriction on the Nolin below the dam. One statewide rule applies at the dam itself, Fishing & Boating Guide page 13, verbatim: “Sport fishing trotlines, jug lines or set lines may not be used within 200 yards below any dam.” On culling, the current in-force 301 KAR 1:201 Section 2(1)(i)1 is unambiguous, verbatim: “No culling statewide.” That is the regulation’s own trout subsection, read directly and confirmed twice; a separate KDFWR summary page states a Cumberland River-only culling exception that this page does not rely on for the trout limits above.

Once the float is inside Mammoth Cave National Park

NPS, verbatim: “No fishing license or permit is required within the boundary of Mammoth Cave National Park.” “Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations regarding fish size and possession limits apply to all fish caught within Mammoth Cave National Park.” “Live minnows and worms may be used in all other waters” (the park’s worm-only rule names four ponds, not the rivers). Where the park boundary crosses the Nolin is not published on any page we read — NPS says only that the confluence is “in the park.” Carry a licence and trout permit from the ramp; the exemption starts at a line we cannot place for you.

Verify before you keep anything. These are the limits KDFWR publishes as of the March 2026–February 2027 Guide and the current 301 KAR 1:201. The Guide and the regulation are the authority, not this page.

KY 259 north from Brownsville, then KY 728 — the tailwater itself

This corridor carries everything KDFWR records for this water: one road in, one ramp, the bank below the dam, and the Corps day-use area around it.

Road in (KDFWR, verbatim): “KY 259 N of Brownsville; right on KY 728; follow signs to tailwater area.” The lake-side Nolin Dam Ramp and the Corps office are reached on the same road (“Hwy 728 E; follow signs to ramp”) — those are the lake’s sites, on the lake page.

Houchin Ferry — the float’s take-out, in Mammoth Cave National Park

This is not a second fishing destination on this water — it is where the Park Service’s float from the Tailwater ramp ends, on the Green River, 1.7 miles upstream of the confluence. NPS, verbatim: “Trip Distance: 11.1 miles (17.8 km) | Approximate Travel Time: 4 to 6 hours” — the Nolin “approximately 7.5 miles to its confluence with the Green River,” then “upstream 1.7 miles on the Green River.” NPS names two alternates: the “former site of Lock and Dam #6 or the boat ramp in the town on Brownsville, 3.2 miles (5.1 km) downstream from the confluence.” Neither is described in detail on any page we read.

Road in (Recreation.gov, Houchin Ferry Campground): from I-65 exit 53 (KY 70/255) or exit 48 (KY 255) to Brownsville Rd, “follow this all the way until it ends at Hwy-101, turn right go about a quarter mile to Houchin Ferry Rd.
