The project that is holding it down

2023	Pool restricted to 490 ft as an interim risk reduction measure. Fill start pushed from 15 Mar to about 1 Apr; drawdown capped at 2 ft per day.
Dec 2025	Phase 2 contract awarded to Thalle-Bauer LLC. Base contract $320 million.
21 Jul 2026	Groundbreaking. New outlet works, plus a cutoff wall driven deep through the dam. Program cost up to $891 million.
6–8 years	The 490 ft restriction stays in place until the project is complete. Plan around it, not through it.

What five feet actually costs you. Surface area shrinks where the ground is flattest, so the shallow creek arms and back-of-bay flats lose the most water and the steep main-lake banks lose the least. That is reasoning from the shape of the basin, not a Corps figure — but it is where to start looking when the map no longer matches the water.

Everything is five feet shallower than you remember

Structure that sat safely five feet down at summer pool is now at or near the surface — humps, stumps, roadbeds and old channel edges. This is reasoning from the elevation, not a published hazard list, but it is the predictable consequence of holding a lake five feet low: the lake did not move, the water did. Idle into unfamiliar water and trust the sounder over the memory.

All paved except Adkins Camp (unpaved) and the Tailwater (bank only). Three of the 21 ramps are out at 490 ft — and USACE has not said which three. Their published line is that "all but three" stay accessible and that all Corps-managed ramps remain usable. No ramp-by-ramp list exists, so this card does not invent one. North Fork beach is not usable; Axtel beach is campers only. Call the lake office at (270) 257-2061 before driving to an unfamiliar ramp.

The special limits run up to the KY 84 bridge. Above that you are back on statewide rules. No lake-specific catfish regulation is published here.

Pool gauge: USGS 03318005, Rough River Lake near Falls of Rough — that is the lake elevation station, parameter 62614. Station 03318010 is the tailwater and will not tell you the pool.

What three years of gauge readings say. Every year of record the pool holds 489–491 ft through August, September and October, then falls. November is when the floor drops — 476, 479, 474 ft — and December is about 470. Twenty feet in eight weeks, every year. 95 KDFWR fish attractors in eight clusters, more than any other water in this series.
