Kentucky Lake

The dam end. Five paved, no-fee launches off US 62 and US 641 at Gilbertsville and Grand Rivers — two state-park and marina ramps, two TVA public-use areas, and the Gilbertsville ramp, which is the tailwater.

Three numbers to get right
What you hearWhat the primary sources actually say
"Just read the USGS gauge."There isn't one. USGS 03609000 served "0 data types" on 10 Sep 2026. The pool is TVA's: its lake-levels page, or NWS gauge KYDK2. A link, never a level.
"Winter pool is way down."Five feet. TVA: "typical summer target level is 359 feet"; "minimum winter elevation of 354 feet". No fill or drawdown date on any readable page; no KDFWR launch on this lake carries a winter-pool warning.
"A Kentucky licence covers the lake."North of the US 68 / KY 80 bridge, yes. South of it to the US 79 bridge a Kentucky licence covers a boat angler under Kentucky rules; a bank angler follows the state they stand in; Blood River is Kentucky-only. Not Lake Barkley.
What the pool does on this road
Everything on this road is paved and rated for any trailerable boat except Little Bear and the tailwater ramp (light boats); none carries a KDFWR pool note. This is the deep, navigation end — the dam pool the 354-foot winter minimum exists to keep. KDFWR's 2026 forecast puts blue catfish "along the main river channel"; the dam reach is where the old channel runs closest to the road. The forecast is dated 2026; the rest is the shape of a river reservoir, not a survey.
Gilbertsville launches onto the river, not the lake. It is KDFWR's tailwater record (wid=320): sauger 14 in / 6 as on the lake, plus snagging zones — dam to the new US 62 bridge "open to snagging 24 hours per day from January 1 through May 31", sunset to sunrise 1 June–31 December; "closed to snagging year round" from the US 62 bridge to I-24; "Bow anglers may fish up to 200 yards below Kentucky Dam." Kentucky Lock is a Corps construction site into 2027; boater impacts status pending.
